What it is

Purpose and use


Confined space work has a different measuring task from wearing a detector on a belt. Before anyone enters, the atmosphere inside has to be assessed from outside — which requires an instrument that can draw a sample through a hose at several depths, because gases stratify. After entry, the same instrument continues to monitor.

Five measuring channels matter here because a confined space frequently combines oxygen deficiency or enrichment, a combustible gas, and more than one toxic component. Compromising on the number of channels is how pre-entry testing produces a reassuring result that is wrong.

Why measure at several depths in a confined space?

Because gases stratify by density. A heavy gas collects at the bottom of a vessel and a light one under the roof, so a single measurement at the manhole can be clean while the working level is not. A pre-entry instrument with a sampling hose is what makes measuring at several depths possible.

Is a five-gas instrument always necessary for entry work?

No, but the number of channels has to cover the credible hazards of that specific space — oxygen plus combustible gas plus every toxic component that the previous contents or the surrounding process can produce. The channel count follows the risk assessment, not the budget.
