What it is

Purpose and use


The Icon covers the classic confined space and general plant combination: oxygen, hydrogen sulphide and combustible gas measured as percentage of the lower explosive limit, plus a choice of carbon monoxide or sulphur dioxide as the fourth channel. Sulphur dioxide as an alternative to carbon monoxide matters in metallurgy, pulp and paper and parts of the chemical industry, where the relevant toxic hazard is not CO.

The icon-based display is a practical rather than a cosmetic decision: it removes the language barrier in mixed international crews, which is the normal situation on a European industrial site.

Questions about Honeywell BW™ Icon and Icon+


Carbon monoxide or sulphur dioxide as the fourth gas?

It follows the process. Carbon monoxide is the usual choice where incomplete combustion is the hazard; sulphur dioxide is the relevant channel in smelting, roasting, pulp bleaching and parts of the chemical industry. If both are credible, an Icon+ configured accordingly or a five-gas instrument is the better answer.

What is the difference between Icon and Icon+ in daily use?

None at the display. The difference is commercial: the Icon runs for a fixed two-year life and is then replaced, while the Icon+ has replaceable sensors and batteries and stays in service as long as you maintain it.
